Boat US National Alert Recall Registry - Sunday, October 25, 2009

The BoatU.S. National Recall Alert Registry is a universal registration site designed to put manufacturers in touch with owners when safety defect recalls are announced. Boat and marine engine defect recalls often involve serious safety problems that must be corrected so that boats can be operated safely. Federal law requires boat and marine engine manufacturers to use "reasonable diligence" in maintaining lists of first purchasers, so owner records are often incomplete, especially for used boats. Consumers may never be notified when safety defects are discovered.

Fire Extinguishers Recalled - Monday, August 17, 2009

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced a voluntary recall of about 167,000 Kidde XL fire extinguishers. Pressurized cylinders in the affected units could lose pressure and fail to operate, putting consumers and their property at risk in the event of fire.

The recall involves the Kidde XL Fire Extinguishers with model numbers FX340SC, FX340H, FX340GW, XL5MR, FX210R, FX340SC-2, FX210W, XL2.5TCZ-4, and E-340-3 manufactured between October 2007 and April 2008. Consumers can find the model number on the extinguisher’s front label and the manufacture year stamped on the bottom.

If you own an affected extinguisher, you should check the pressure gauge. If it points to the red zone, contact Kidde for a free replacement extinguisher. If the gauge is not in the red zone but you still have questions, please contact Kidde for additional information at 888-345-4407 between 0800 and 1700 Eastern time Monday through Friday or visit Kidde’s website.

BlueChart g2 and g2 Vision Data Card Version 2009 - Friday, August 21, 2009

Out of an abundance of caution, Garmin has voluntarily chosen to globally recall its 2009 version of BlueChart g2 and g2 Vision data cards. In certain waters, there are inaccuracies and/or omissions in the way that this specific version of charting represents depth contours and depth areas, resulting in the depiction of water depth as deeper than the actual depth under certain display conditions.

Boaters should not use BlueChart g2 or g2 Vision 2009 data cards, dated March 2009, for navigation. Any boater who owns BlueChart g2 or g2 Vision v2009 will be given a replacement traditional BlueChart card or g2 Vision card v2008.5 (dated July 2008) free of charge and will also receive the 2009 card free of charge when it is re-released.
